Yes! No website necessary. You can sell products online simply by using a form. Welcome to the world of form-powered e-commerce, where selling online becomes easy and you retain complete control over your valuable customer data.

Who is this guide for?

This straightforward e-commerce approach is perfect for home-based micro-businesses or those looking for a side gig. It’s also an excellent way to test a business idea before investing in a full-fledged e-commerce website to scale your operations.

Let’s get started with the steps.

Let’s Build Your Order Form: Getting Started With Jotform

To begin, you’ll need to create a Jotform account.

About Jotform

Jotform is a powerful and user-friendly online form builder that empowers you to easily create sophisticated online forms and collect essential data. Trusted by over 30 million users globally across various sectors like non-profits, education, small businesses, and enterprises, Jotform provides the tools you need to gather the information necessary to move your business forward.

Once you’ve signed in to your Jotform account, navigate to your workspace at – jotform.com/myworkspace

Your workspace will display all your existing forms. If you’re new to Jotform, this page will be empty. Here are two ways to begin creating your order form:

  1. Click the orange “CREATE” button located on the left sidebar, just beneath the Jotform logo.
  2. Alternatively, navigate to “Templates” in the top menu and then select “Form Templates” (refer to the image below).

There are thousands of free online form templates. These are pre-designed form templates for various business categories. Alternatively you can design an online order form from scratch using the form elements in the Jotform designer.

To quickly find relevant templates, select “Order Forms” from the left-hand menu under the “Types” heading.

You’ll find a variety of order form templates tailored to different product or service categories, such as T-shirt Order Forms, Cake Order Forms, and Florist Order Forms.

Remember, all these pre-designed order forms are fully customizable. You can easily add, remove, and edit fields using Jotform’s intuitive form elements.

For a visual guide, watch my quick video demonstration on how I set up a Business Template Order Form using the Jotform form builder.

To illustrate how this works, I’ve created a sample order form for my business templates, which I typically sell on my website. Feel free to check it out here: Business Template Order Form.

I’ve integrated PayPal for collecting online payments in this example. Jotform offers a variety of other payment service provider integrations you can choose from. Alternatively, you also have the option to create an order form without a direct payment button.

Once a customer fills out the form, you can follow-up for confirmation and then share a payment link. This approach works well for products or services that allow customizations.

However, an upfront payment is always a better option. Choose what works best for you.

Start Selling For FREE

Jotform offers a Free plan that allows up to 100 submissions per month. The view limit per month is 1000.

It’s important to note that the Free plan limits payment submissions to 10 per month. Therefore, if your primary goal is to utilize the full 100 monthly submissions for e-commerce orders, you might consider removing the payment integration initially.

Alternatively, as your order volume grows, upgrading to a paid Jotform plan will unlock higher submission and payment limits.

Finally, once you have built a customer database and are happy with the customer response, you can set-up an e-commerce website for your business.

Other Ways to Sell Online Without a Website

While utilizing an online order form offers arguably the most straightforward path to sell online without a website, it’s worth noting that several other avenues exist for small e-commerce business owners.

Marketplaces: Consider leveraging established online marketplaces. By registering as a seller on these platforms, you can gain immediate access to a large customer base and start showcasing your products. While these platforms often handle aspects like payment processing and customer acquisition, be mindful of associated fees and potential limitations on branding and customer interaction.

Gumroad or Etsy for Digital Products: If your business focuses on digital offerings such as templates, presentations, e-books, or software, platforms like Gumroad and Etsy provide specialized environments.

These platforms are designed to handle digital product delivery, licensing (where applicable), and payment processing, making them excellent choices for creators and sellers in the digital space.

Social Commerce: The power of social media extends beyond marketing. Many businesses successfully engage in direct sales through platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook. This often involves sharing product information, engaging with potential customers through direct messages, and utilizing platform-specific features like shopping stickers or catalogs. While effective for building relationships and reaching existing networks, managing orders and payments might require more manual effort.

Beyond Website-Free Options: It’s also important to acknowledge that technological advancements have significantly simplified the process of setting up your own e-commerce website, often without requiring any coding expertise. Platforms like Shopify offer intuitive drag-and-drop interfaces and comprehensive features for managing products, orders, and payments. Similarly, WooCommerce, a popular plugin for WordPress, provides a flexible and customizable e-commerce solution that is relatively easy to set up and manage. You can even see a practical example on my own shop page, which I designed using WooCommerce without writing a single line of code.

Takeaway:

Ultimately, the journey of starting your online business begins with a viable business idea and the drive to succeed. Rest assured that the “how-to” aspects can be navigated, as a multitude of options cater to various needs and technical comfort levels.

If you’re currently exploring an e-commerce business idea, I strongly encourage you to experiment with the order form method discussed in this guide to initiate sales without the immediate need for a website. Share the form link within your network, including friends and family. Gather valuable feedback and customer reviews. Building your initial customer base through this lean approach will provide crucial insights before you consider the potential of scaling up your operations.

Selling Handmade Bookmarks and Greeting Cards (No Website Needed!)

Hand-drawn book marks.

Priya, a first-year college student, is very creative and makes hand drawn bookmarks and greeting cards as a hobby. Friends and family members occasionally buy from her. She now wants to test her hobby as a small business. How can she start selling handmade bookmarks and greeting cards without having to set up an ecommerce website?

Priya has a fantastic opportunity to turn her passion into profit. Here’s a step-by-step guide for her:

Getting Started (The Setup)

  1. Photography is Key:
    • Action: Take high-quality photos of her bookmarks and greeting cards. Good lighting (natural light near a window is best), a clean background, and showing scale (e.g., a hand holding a bookmark, or an open card next to a pen) are crucial.
    • Why it works: Since there’s no website to browse, the photos are her storefront. They need to be inviting and clearly show the product.
    • Pro Tip: Take photos that can be cropped for different platforms (square for Instagram, horizontal for WhatsApp catalogs).
  2. Product Catalog & Pricing:
    • Action: Create a simple, clear list of her products with prices. She can categorize them (e.g., “Floral Bookmarks,” “Birthday Cards,” “Custom Designs”).
    • Why it works: This makes it easy for potential customers to see what’s available and how much it costs.
    • Tool Idea: A simple Google Doc or PDF can serve as her initial catalog.
  3. Choose Her Primary Selling Channels:
    • Action: Based on her products (physical, handmade items), the best initial channels are:
      • Instagram (as a visual catalog & selling tool): Set up a business profile. This is perfect for showcasing visual products.
      • WhatsApp Business (for direct sales & communication): Create a business account. She can use the “Catalog” feature here.
      • Etsy (for a ready-made marketplace): This is designed for handmade goods and comes with built-in trust and traffic.
    • Why it works: These platforms are free or low-cost to start, have large user bases, and don’t require website coding.
  4. Set Up Her Order/Payment System (No Website Needed!):
    • Action: This is where the online form comes in!
      • Jotform (or Google Forms): Create a simple order form. Include fields for:
        • Customer Name
        • Email/Phone Number (for contact)
        • Product Selection (e.g., drop-down for specific bookmark/card designs)
        • Quantity
        • Any Customization Requests (e.g., “What name for personalized card?”)
        • Delivery Address
        • Payment Method Selected (e.g., “UPI/Google Pay/Bank Transfer”)
        • Total Amount (she might need to manually calculate and confirm this after the form is submitted for custom orders, or use Jotform’s payment integrations if she feels comfortable).
      • Payment Gateway (UPI is King for India!): Provide her UPI ID (e.g., PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm) as the preferred payment method. Bank transfer is also an option. She can ask customers to share a screenshot of the payment.
    • Why it works: This streamlines the ordering process without complex e-commerce features. Customers fill out a simple form, and she gets all the details. UPI makes payments instant and easy in India.

Promoting Her Business (Getting the Word Out)

  1. Leverage Her Network (Friends & Family First):
    • Action: Share her new “business” announcement on her personal WhatsApp status, Instagram stories, and even through family groups. Offer a special “friends & family” discount for initial orders.
    • Why it works: These are her easiest first customers and can provide valuable feedback and word-of-mouth referrals.
  2. Instagram – Her Visual Shop Window:
    • Action:
      • Create a separate Business Account: Use a catchy, relevant name (e.g., “Priya’s Paperie,” “Creative Crafts by Priya”).
      • Post Regularly: Share beautiful photos and short videos of her creations. Show the process of making them (people love behind-the-scenes!).
      • Use Relevant Hashtags: #HandmadeBookmarks #GreetingCardsIndia #SupportSmallBusiness #CollegeStudentArt #ArtIndia #CustomCards #BookmarkLover (Mix popular and niche tags).
      • Engage: Respond to comments and DMs promptly.
      • Link in Bio: Put the link to her Jotform order form in her Instagram bio.
    • Why it works: Instagram is visually driven and perfect for showcasing handmade goods.
  3. WhatsApp Business – Direct Sales Powerhouse:
    • Action:
      • Set up a Catalog: Upload her product photos and descriptions directly into the WhatsApp Business Catalog. This acts like a mini-shop.
      • Broadcast Lists (Carefully!): Create a broadcast list for interested customers to send updates on new designs or offers. (Don’t spam!)
      • Status Updates: Regularly update her WhatsApp status with new designs, behind-the-scenes snippets, and testimonials.
      • One-on-One Chat: Use this for personalized customer service, answering questions, and confirming orders.
    • Why it works: WhatsApp is ubiquitous for direct, personal communication, fostering trust.
  4. Etsy or Similar Marketplace:
    • Action: Set up an Etsy shop. List her bookmarks and greeting cards with clear photos, detailed descriptions, and accurate pricing (remember to factor in Etsy fees and shipping).
    • Why it works: Etsy has a massive audience specifically looking for handmade and unique items. It handles payments and provides seller tools. She gets instant credibility.
    • Pro Tip: Focus on good keywords in her Etsy listings so people can find her products easily.
  5. Local College/Community Buzz:
    • Action:
      • Posters: Put up small, attractive posters (with a QR code linking to her Jotform or Instagram) on college notice boards (with permission).
      • College Festivals/Flea Markets: If her college has craft fairs or pop-up markets, participate! It’s a great way to meet customers in person.
      • Local Stores (Consignment): Approach small, independent bookstores or gift shops in her area to see if they’d sell her bookmarks/cards on consignment (they get a percentage of each sale).
    • Why it works: Taps into a local, captive audience directly interested in supporting student artists.

Growing Her Business (Scaling Up)

  1. Gather Testimonials & Feedback:
    • Action: After each sale, ask customers for feedback and if she can share their positive comments (with their permission, of course!).
    • Why it works: Social proof is powerful. People trust what others say. Share these on Instagram stories and WhatsApp status.
  2. Introduce Customization:
    • Action: Offer personalized bookmarks (with names) or custom greeting cards for special occasions. Charge a bit extra for this.
    • Why it works: Customization adds significant value and appeal, making her products unique gifts.
  3. Bundle Products:
    • Action: Create “gift sets” – a bookmark + a matching card, or a set of 3 bookmarks at a slightly discounted price.
    • Why it works: Increases the average order value and offers more value to the customer.
  4. Engage with Trends & Seasons:
    • Action: Create designs relevant to upcoming festivals (Diwali, Christmas, Holi), specific events (graduations), or current popular themes (e.g., if a certain book series is trending).
    • Why it works: Taps into existing demand and keeps her offerings fresh.
  5. Consider Small Local Events/Fairs:
    • Action: Beyond college, look for local craft fairs, farmers’ markets with artisan sections, or community events where she can set up a small stall.
    • Why it works: Direct sales, immediate feedback, and expands her customer base beyond online.
  6. Loyalty Program (Simple!):
    • Action: Offer a simple “buy 5, get 1 free” system, or a small discount for repeat customers. She can track this manually on a spreadsheet.
    • Why it works: Encourages repeat purchases and builds customer loyalty.

By following these steps, Priya can effectively test her hobby as a small business, build a customer base, and gain valuable experience, all without the initial complexity and cost of setting up her own e-commerce website. She’ll be focusing on what she does best: creating beautiful handmade items!
